about

This is a madrigal by Jacques Arcadelt from 1554. Its text reflects the idea that love and marriage are bound to social status, and that sometimes random chance can override this.

lyrics

Margot, labourez les vignes, vigne, vigne, vignolet,
Margot, labourez les vignes bientôt.
En passant par la Lorraine,
Rencontrai trois capitaines,
Ils m’ont appelé vilaine,
Je ne suis pas si vilaine,
Puisque le fils du roi m’aime,
Il m’a donné pour étrenne,
Un bouquet de Marjolaine,
S’il fleurit je serait reine,
S’il y meurt je perds ma peine.

Margot, labor at the vine soon.
As I passed through the Lorraine,
I chanced upon three capitaines,
and they called me country-bred.
But I'm not that country-bred.
Since the King's son loves me dear,
he brought a present to me:
a big spray of marjoram.
If it blooms I will be Queen.
Should it die, I've lost my time.
